Why didn’t we win that by-election?

Published by Dave under Sottish Politics

David Cameron might have brought us optimism and renewed faith in the future, but there is no miracle cure to the Conservatives' unpopularity in some areas of the country. The cure is listening, good policy and hard work. As Cameron himself has expressed, turning the map blue is going to be a challenging time, it is by no means impossible and there's a good chance if we have the right ideas and consolidation within the party.

Gordon Brown lives in the Dunfermline and West Fife constituency, and it's a constituency in Scotland, it was also previous Labour by a majority of 11,000. Had this been a seat down south the Conservatives could have walked away with it in the bag; so I do not consider this to be a true test of how well the Conservative party is doing. The public opinion of the Conservative party is changing, but let me be blunt, taking Scotland is not something that is going to happen after a few weeks of work. The results of the Dunfermline and West Fife by-election indicate in no way how the Conservatives will fair in the country or indeed even in that seat at the next General Election.

Why did the Liberal Democrats win?

They've been getting a lot of publicity recently, people saw Scot Charles Kennedy walking through the streets and decided to give him and his party the sympathy vote.

Aw! The poor Lib Dems.

Silvio Berlusconi says ‘I am like Jesus’

Published by Dave under Sottish Politics

You know, the Italian Prime Minister really shouldn't be making statements like this, but I enjoy reading them. Why is it that governments such as Britain and America follow a strict code of conduct in that they will not make outrageously controversial comments, but Vladimir Putin and Silvio Berlusconia just go ahead and say what they like?

Now this Silvio Berlusconi, he would be a riot at a dinner party. Last week he also compared himself to Napoleon and in the past compared a German politician to a concentration camp guard. Does he realise that he's the Italian Prime Minister in the year 2006?

Next week's headline: Italian Prime Minister claims right to the keys of St. Peter.

“If a wind turbine falls, a sheep might get a headache.”

Published by Dave under Sottish Politics

This was the Green Party's only negative view on wind turbines, when it got it's opportunity on Channel Five today, to tell the country how it planned to make things better. Although not being interested in the job, if I was Campaign Co-ordinator for the Greens, I would have presented a rounded broadcast on various relevant issues.

But what we got from Cllr Keith Taylor (presenting) was:

"if a wind turbine falls over, a sheep might get a headache"

and "solar panels that work when it's cloudy."

Their biggest weapon yet was the use of the phrase 'Climate Terror' instead of 'Climate Change.' Completely ignoring urbanised areas, viewers were shown landscape views of the countryside, emanating the message of "Do you really want to see all this disappear?"

No, but I'll tell you what I do want to disappear: hospital waiting lists, bureaucracy, political correctness, world poverty, and wish-washy fringe parties who try and present themselves as capable of Government when in fact their financial director is also their marketing consultant, and also drives the minibus.

What is the Green party's opinion on tax? Does anyone know? Does the Green Party know? Their answer to tax rises will probably be wind turbines, which as we know, can be a danger to sheep.

Yet again we see the problem with parties who centre themselves around one policy. The S.N.P. are plagued by this as well; they throw all their weight behind independence for Scotland, and what the Greens would try and fix with wind turbines, the S.N.P. would try and fix with Scottish Independence.

I believe green issues are very important, and they would be an integral part of the next Conservative government; it's something to which David Cameron has committed himself. But I don't believe that in fulfilling our duty to the environment we should neglect other important issues, such as education, public services, tax and world poverty. The Green Party and the S.N.P. will certainly answer that they do have varied policies and they do make them known, but they don't give a rounded presentation, they have no time for problems such as crime in inner-city areas.

But because it's the Green Party they'll get the sympathy vote, since they're so nice and they only want to help the environment, that's not a bad thing is it? Well it is if they ever get Members of Parliament and he or she spends all his time only talking about the environment.
